For a child traumatised by sexual abuse, accessing counselling at the right time is essential for the healing process. Yet right now, children are waiting up to half a year to get in to see a counsellor at Bravehearts.
Bravehearts has seen a 25% increase in referrals to our counselling service in the past year. We urgently need funds to increase our counselling service and reduce the number of children waiting for our help, the children on this waitlist are relying on your support this tax time.
As with 70-90% of sexual abuse perpetrated against children in Australia, 8 year-old Alicia* was abused by a person she knew and trusted. A person who spent years grooming her and gaining the trust of her mother, Susan.
When Alicia finally told Susan about the abuse, the family was never the same again. Her daughter was suffering from deep trauma and Susan knew she needed to get help.
Long-term effects of child sexual abuse can include depression, learning difficulties, substance abuse, self-harm, relationship problems, eating disorders and more. Susan knew the sooner she could get Alicia to see a counsellor the better.
Susan turned to Bravehearts, but instead of getting help for Alicia right away, she was told her distressed daughter had to wait.
And Alicia is still waiting.
Bravehearts’ waitlist is growing and we need your help URGENTLY. We need funds to increase our counselling service and reduce the number of children waiting for our help.
$150 is enough to fund one counselling session – can we rely on your support today?
