When I was a child, I was repeatedly sexually abused.
Like many, reading that might make you feel uncomfortable.
It shouldn’t. Because that’s the reason why, like many, it took me 15 years to go to the police. The person who did this to me was sentenced to a lengthy prison term.
It’s taken me ANOTHER 12 years to be brave enough to write that first sentence. And publicise it.
I so desperately want to change this. I have children myself. And I don’t EVER want them, or any child, to feel how I felt. Scared, confused, alone and trapped.
So I am running 14kms on Wednesday 2nd July 2025. Anyone who knows me, knows I am NOT a runner. But that doesn’t matter. It’s not about 39 year old me.
It’s about 11 year old me, 12 year old me, 13 year old me.
It’s about every survivor who knows their abuser (79% to be exact).
It's about the 1 in 4 Australians who have experienced child sexual abuse.
It’s about educating parents and caregivers.
It's about my own two children.
It’s about literally every child on this planet.
SPEAK LOUDLY. YOU DESERVE TO BE HEARD.
And if you can’t, I will speak for you until you can. Really, REALLY loudly.
This year, I’ll do 14kms. Next year, I’ll do the marathon. One day, I’d love to do all 7 marathons.
I’m doing this in support of the Bravehearts Foundation. An incredible organisation whose sole purpose is to provide a coordinated and holistic approach to the prevention and treatment of child sexual abuse.
