I'm running for team Braverunners for the Bravehearts charity

Hello, inspired by the work of Braverunners, an organisation that hosts low-cost coastal fun running community events with the goal of raising funds for various charities, I've decided to take on a personal challenge of running five marathons in five consecutive days.

To help keep me motivated, I would love for you to join me in raising funds for the important work of the Bravehearts charity. With your support, they provide advice and assistance in child-protection training and educational programs.

The physical challenge I will go through pales compared to the ones that affect the children and families that use Braveheart services. I hope to make a small but impactful difference to their cause.

If you are able, please make a donation.

Thank you.

Day four and five - the driveway marathons

Monday 26th Jul
As Adelaide went into a snap lockdown at midnight on Wednesday - the official event was unfortunately cancelled.

I decided to persevere and undertake some personal marathons. The COVID-19 restrictions meant we were able to do 90 minutes of exercise within a 2.5km radius of our home. This meant I was able to run 16km outside in a loop. But unfortunately, it also meant I had to follow up by doing 180 laps of our driveway to make up the remaining 26km. We had to measure to get the precise number of laps!

At the start, I thought 180 laps didn't sound too difficult. However, 20 laps in, I quickly realised how hard this would be. Both of these runs took a lot longer than I anticipated because of the looping of the circuit I made in the backyard.

On Wednesday, I was lucky to have the sun out most of the time, but on Thursday, Adelaide recorded its coldest winter day in almost 30 years. My hands were freezing and I had to keep them tucked in my sleeves during the whole run. Despite the physical and mental challenges, I was able to complete both runs.

I discovered many things over these five days. One of the benefits of running so much is that it gives you a lot of time to reflect on what is important and what to be grateful for.

For instance, I was grateful every time the sun came out, every time a niggle in my foot disappeared, every time a friend sent me a message of support, every time an unexpectedly good song came on, every time someone smiled at me when I passed them and every time it ended!

I believe running also makes you appreciate the smaller, often trivial things, like taking a warm shower, drinking a glass of lemonade, or sitting on the couch. I hope to remind myself of this in the future.

I feel incredibly thankful for all the in-person and virtual support I received. I hope the amount raised can assist with the Braveheart mission.

Thank you again for your generosity.

p.s. If anyone wants to go for a run - let me know! :)

Day three

Monday 26th Jul
Due to developments with event restrictions, this run was done virtually. I decided to run the uni loop which was a 2.2km circuit just in the parklands in North Adelaide.

The first half was completely drenched and I was thankful when the sun came out around 22km in. It was a lot harder to try and stay motivated on my own, but thankfully Thomas and my mum were cheering me on at the end - which of course was the highlight.

Final time was 3 hours and 54 minutes, for an average pace of 5:32 per km. Really happy considering how tired my legs were and how wet it was. I felt very grateful to get this one complete before the lockdown.

Day 1 and 2

Monday 19th Jul
Hi all,

Thank you so much for supporting Bravehearts! These events are put on by Chris from Braverunners to encourage people to run while supporting the mission of Braveheart.

I’ve now finished the first two marathons.

Waking up on the first day, I was incredibly excited but also filled with nerves about how to pace myself with the knowledge of running for the next five days too. I took it easy for the first part and had the lovely company of another runner - Caroline who was also doing the marathon. After that, I got a small niggle in my hip which filled me with some anxiety but thankfully Demi (sister in law) met me at the 27km mark and helped me through the hardest 10km. The finishing time was 4 hours 10 minutes with an average of 5:54 pace. The best part of seeing Reggie (dog) and my brother, and also meeting Sam who had finished his first ever marathon and a woman named Simone who I met running five peaks earlier in the year.

Day 2 was special as I got to run with my dad. Decided to listen to Britney Spears for the entire run and felt a lot better. No niggles and rain gave me the motivation to push a bit harder. I ended up finishing in 3 hours 51 minutes, with an average pace of 5:27. The highlight was meeting another first time marathon runner!

Due to the covid restrictions in Adelaide that have just been announced - day 3 will be a virtual run. I think I will switch it up and run the Uni loop.

Thank you again for your support - fundraising for such an awesome charity is giving me the motivation to keep on keeping on with this goal. Running is quite a solo sport so to have people cheering you on (virtually too) makes such a big difference 🥰
