Charlotte's* Story
Charlotte’s grandfather started sexually abusing her when she was just 8 years old. At the time she was in the custody of her grandparents, so she depended on her grandfather to protect and care for her. Instead, he manipulated and betrayed her in the most heinous of ways.
When she first came to Bravehearts, Charlotte was experiencing severe post-traumatic stress symptoms, including anger, helplessness, disassociation, anxiety, depression and sexual concerns. Her counsellor’s goal was to reduce these symptoms so Charlotte could start enjoying life like a regular teenage girl.
Charlotte saw her counsellor every week for a little over 4 months, as he helped her process the trauma of her abuse. Her counsellor used a variety of therapies in his work with Charlotte, including trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy, art therapy, sensory therapy and mindfulness.
Ultimatley, Charlotte thrived under the therapeutic care of her counsellor here at Bravehearts. She drew ‘before and after counselling’ portraits of herself. These drawings and words speak to the power of specialist counselling for children who have experienced sexual abuse.
